Musician Bukka Allen takes a break from scoring movies

There's a cinematic quality to the songs on Bukka Allen's "Confidante." Many of the songs are full of whens and wheres.

Allen, 40, says he's "drawn to the idea of trying to create snapshots of what's happening in a moment. I'm interested in creating music that has that sort of feel."

"Confidante" is a natural extension of Allen's work with Screen Door Music, a trio he formed with guitarist Rob Gjersoe and cellist Brian Standefer — both of whom play on the album. The three originally formed the band to do film-score work.

Scoring movies, in part, explains why "Confidante" arrives nine years after Sweet Valentine, Allen's great debut album. The Buda-based singer-songwriter also has played keyboards and accordion for acts including the Bodeans, Ian MooreJoe ElyJack Ingram and his father, Terry Allen.
